SR 89 Mousehole Multi-Use Path and UPRR Undercrossing

SR 89 Mousehole Multi-Use Path and UPRR Undercrossing | Truckee, CA

senior project engineer

This new 120' long pedestrian and bicycle underpass tunnel was jacked under the Union Pacific Railroad mainline tracks. Drill Tech constructed a 15' wide by 16' high concrete box for jack and bore operations, as well as multiple retaining walls. The team used ground freezing to stabilize the mixture of sand and boulders that had been used to backfill an old timber trestle. There was no significant movement of the UPRR track at any point during construction and the rail line remained in continuous operation for the duration of the project. The team coordinated with UPRR staff and collaborated with Caltrans and Federal Highway Administration, as the site required extensive traffic control measures with one lane of traffic always open during construction.

U.S. 101 Red Barn Box Jacking

U.S. 101 Red Barn Box Jacking | Prunedale, CA

senior project executive

Drill Tech was contracted to install a 110' long, 10' wide and 9' tall concrete box under Highway 101 in Monterey County. The team built the launch slab and the box away from the highway, eliminating the need for additional support structures. Because there were only 4 feet of cover over the box, Drill Tech utilized a special steel sheet roll-out technique to prevent movement of the overlying ground. The box was successfully moved under the highway without disrupting the traffic above. The team also installed Soil Nails and Sculpted and Stained Shotcrete.

Feather River Canyon Culvert Replacement | Plumas County, CA

senior project executive

This project for Union Pacific Railroad included the installation of three steel culverts, ranging from 70' to 300' long sections, under the railroad tracks in a remote location in Feather River Canyon. Drill Tech constructed portal access with drill/blast excavation to facilitate the installation of these culverts. The pipes were jacked through a variety of ground including shot rock, boulders, and railroad construction debris. Drill Tech performed the necessary engineering and execution to successfully jack the pipes through these challenging geological conditions with no impact on railroad operations.
